MIHAELA MAGOPAT
This installation project contains a video and little houses models. The video was developed during a journey from Bucharest to Marginea. Marginea is a small village where I spent my childhood.
The images were taken from the train and from around the house of my familly - which is reproduced as a little house model for the installlation and which is the point of intersection between the video and the other little houses models.
The video shows a fragmetation of reviewed images and mostly, the distance that I wear in relation to those places. The subtitles give us the impression that we are thrown in fiction. The subtitle "I sleep in reality passively" announces in fact somehow the difficulty to distinguish the dream state from reality which then shows a diluted story. It's rather about the position of being awakened or in a dreaming state, between two space-times which goes back to the past.
The feeling of disorientation gives mere hypothesis of an existing story. For example, the final subtitle "a few objects have occupied the place where I was hiding from my mother a whole day" leads to the absence of the recit where the narrativity is in a state of numbness.
The reproduction of the family house was the biginning of the second part of the project. As I often moved from one place to another, this project continued with the reconstruction of each place where I leaved. In this work it's also about the question of possessing a house or a place in the sense that there is no real possession of those places and this sets doubt within the possession of the past events and memories as well.
This project was a research of a certain past which exist only in the form of memories which is none other than the memorial space. The installation represents two different kind of journeys regarding the notion of the past. One is through the video, the real journey back home, and the other journey which implies - "pshychically" - the recostruction of each inhabited place.
I titled this project, "Reviewed" but Joel Bartolomeo suggested me that I should call it "l'ile d'enfance" because in a way it has to do with a "memorial place" (a fragil, protected and a secluded one) that represent my childhood which means more than some "reviewed" images or recalled memories.
